Choosing the the perfect blinds for your windows is very important to get your room looking just right. If you pick blinds which compliment, they will help enhance the visual quality of everything else in the room. But an inappropriate choice of blinds may well make an otherwise well decorated room look awful. Equally critical is ensuring your pick of window blinds is compatible with the function of the room - choose the wrong material and your great looking blinds may end up covered with unremovable dirt, mold or grease stains. But if you can find the optimum combination of visual appeal, durability and cost, blinds are a flexible, attractive and good value window covering. Here is a guide to making sure you end up with the right blinds.

Step one: first of all, before making any choices, measure the window. If you are going to use an inside mount then remember to measure inside your window frame (both the width and length).

Step two: what is the normal activity of the room you are fitting the blinds in? Particular rooms call for binds with appropriate properties. For the kitchen, you need blinds that will resist staining and grease and are easy to maintain. Make sure the blinds you choose have smooth painted finishes, rather than textured. Faux wood and aluminium are good choices of material. Bedroom blinds should be good at keeping the light out. Black out blinds may do well here if the color works with the rest of the room. Bathroom blinds need to be able to cope with humidity and potentially having large quantities of water sprayed directly on them. Vinyl is usually best here. Blinds for a small child's room should be selected with safety in mind. Blind chords and small children are not a good mix.

Step three: now look at the effect you want to achieve in the room and pick a blind colour and material which helps make that effect. For example black blinds can look very stylish in the right setting. Large windows and doors may benefit from vertical rather than horizontal blinds. Wood blinds will help you achieve a natural or rustic look.

Step four: shop around for the best possible price. Going to a brick and mortar store is a great way to help make your mind up about what you want because you can see the blinds hung up and see how the material looks. However, once you've made your choice you should compare prices on the internet which is where you'll usually get the best deal.

Ultimately all the effort in getting just the right blinds will be worth it when they are in place and helping your room look great.
